Week 1
Fig. 2.1 Project Reference

This week, I presented a rough idea of what I would like to work on for my FYP and received advice to explore sustainable packaging that is both microwaveable and freezable, as my project involves pre-packed food. Moving forward, I plan to research suitable sustainable packaging options and start drafting my project plan. This includes brainstorming potential brand names, researching existing competitors, developing a problem statement by identifying key challenges, and exploring potential target audiences. Additionally, I also have to create a mood board to establish the concept and art direction for my project.

Week 2
Fig. 2.2 Week 2 - Progress Check

I began coming up with a few possible brand names and also build the brand story in relevance to the problem statement that I have formulated. As the project aims to focus on convenience, nutritiously balanced meals for students and working adults, I also drew up the target audience with regards of the 4 segmentations including Geographic, Psychographic, Demographic and Behavioural. I also included the moodboards that I have made for each the overall brand concept, icon and typeface style and also the sustainable materials that can be used.

Week 3

Fig. 2.3 Week 3 - List of Deliverables

During this week's consultation, I showed a more detailed and structured plan of my project and got a green light to proceed with developing the list of deliverables I will be producing. My main deliverables were the website for customers to order online and social media where the brand would post information and any updates available. Whereas for the collaterals, the main item would be the packaging design, followed by promotional posters and rest of the brand merchandise.

Week 4
Fig. 2.4 Week 4 - Progress Check

For this week, I began consulting with Mr. Asrizal for my project directions. While showing him my proposal draft, he gave a few suggestions on how the brand business could be run so that it is different from what we usually see in the current market. He suggested to look into pre-packed supplementary dishes that consumers can purchase and add on to their meals as these can also be supplied to convenience stores, and partner with any restaurants that may be interested. Consumers can also pick and choose what dishes they like and can mix and match in their daily diets.

Week 5
Fig. 2.5 Week 5 - Progress Check

This week, we learned about the concept of ToFu, MoFu, and BoFu and how to structure our deliverables to effectively attract and guide consumers toward our brand. I was also advised to determine rough pricing for each category of dishes, taking into account factors such as labor costs, electricity and water expenses, delivery fees, and other relevant costs. Moving forward, I will separate the brand development into phases, scout suitable locations based on geographical segmentation, and estimate prices for each pre-packed meal.

Week 6

Fig. 2.6 Week 6 - Key Differentiators

I was advised to do some research and analyze a few competitors in Malaysia to better define and strengthen the brand’s unique selling proposition (USP). This will include conducting a SWOT analysis to understand market positioning. Additionally, I also thought of adding two personas, one for students and another for working adults to identify their pain points and needs, helping to justify the brand's relevance and importance. To further develop the brand identity, begin sketching logo ideas and selecting a suitable color palette and typefaces.

Week 7: Proposal Presentation

Fig. 2.6 Week 7 - Proposal Presentation

It's presentation week! During my session, both Mr. Asrizal and Mr. Kamal were present and they gave their thoughts on my project idea. Overall, the feedback was that this business idea has strong potential and would be successful in carefully selected locations, particularly among the target age groups and income levels. Moving on, I will continue developing the designs, including logos and graphic elements, and enhance the packaging designs by adding more details. Additionally, I will also have to source top-angle food images to use in my mockups for a more polished and realistic presentation.

FEEDBACK

Week 9

Packaging design looks cohesive and consistent for all the categories. Brand pattern fits well with the colour palette. For the order sheet, the text on the yellow background is not visible and each step should be equally spaced for consistency.

  • Plan out IG content for 9 posts

  • Extra Collateral: Tent cards to promote IG and Website through QR code

  • Finalise things to print, make diecut guides and compile

Week 17: Final Presentation Week
Website navigation bar should stay locked so that users can always navigate to other pages whenever needed. There should be a cart animation whenever the consumer adds something to the cart so that it alerts them. The packaging design should have more detailed nutrition fact labels, and also some recyclable and eco-friendly stickers to indicate that the material is sustainable. Also do include symbols like microwave safe, fridge safe, halal certified and other necessary stickers as they are important information that consumers would want to know. Make a sleeve as well for the packaging, and include QR codes for the consumers to scan to IG and website. Explain a bit more on the reason behind using the pattern motifs, linking it back to the Baba Nyonya culture and how it is relevant to the brand. Think about how the order sheet can be improved so that it is not too costly to be produced for one-time use only. Instagram posts would have been better if it could encapsulate the whole brand with a selling story, instead of just conventional posts marketing new items.

  • Finalise things to print, make diecut guides and compile

  • Make changes to Website (navigation bar & cart animation)

  • Add nutritional facts and other necessary labels

  • Make a sleeve for the packaging container

REFLECTION

Looking back on this project, I realize how long yet fulfilling the journey has been. It was a challenging yet enjoyable experience, and I have learned and grown so much throughout this module. As I reflect on my progress, I can see how I’ve applied the skills and knowledge I have gained from my studies and internship. From research to execution, everything came together quite smoothly, allowing me to work efficiently and bring my ideas to life in a way that exceeded my initial expectations. One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was seeing my research and design progress flow out smoothly. I was able to do more than what I originally planned for myself, which gave me a sense of accomplishment. However, that doesn’t mean the process was without challenges. Juggling four different modules while handling the heavy workload of this Major Project was not easy. There were moments of stress and exhaustion, but through perseverance and proper time management, I was able to push through. In the end, all the effort was worth it. The final outcome turned out well, and I am proud of what I have accomplished. This project has reinforced my confidence in my abilities and shown me the importance of resilience, time-management, and creativity. It has been a truly valuable experience, and I am grateful for the lessons and growth it has brought me. At last, I would also like to thank my lecturers, my friends, my family members and my uncle (who has kindly helped me with all my printables) for their thoughtful input and unwavering support throughout these 17 weeks. The journey was a lot more enjoyable with them by my side and it will definitely be one of the best things I will miss about Major Project.

Special thanks to Ms. Sticky Notes for always sticking around my home screen and reminding me of what I have & haven't done. Seeing all the green ticks just makes me feel so accomplished. Another day, another slay~ Signing off!
