Week 3: Project 1B
Digital Collage
This week we got to learn how to use the lasso tool, pen tool as well as layering. To put those newly learned techniques into use, we had to do a digital collage using the given images that we have to trace out using the lasso tool.
1) Pre-Composition #1
After Week 4's review by both lecturer and peer votes, I have done some revision on my 3 compositions and thought that I could make improvements to make it look more interesting. By keeping the same elements, I added gradient into the background to make it less empty and rearranged some of the elements to make it look more coordinated.
In the end, I have decided to proceed with this as final.

Week 2: Project 1A
Collage Design Elements
After flipping through magazines, I have gathered some interesting graphics and texts to be put together for collage. The magazines that I have solely focused on nature and everything science related, which was I have chosen to follow a 'Space' theme.
1) Pre-Composition #1
2) Pre-Composition #2
3) Pre-Composition #3
4) Pre-Composition #4
5) Pre-Composition #5

After Week 3's review, I have decided to go with Pre-Composition #3 as the final outcome. I liked Pre-Composition # 5 as well, but by comparing both compositions side by side, Pre-Composition #3 looked more interesting as there varying colours of text and they somehow relate to the graphic elements in the composition.

Reflection
Working on both physical and digital collage have helped me understand the harmony of arranging elements together in terms of colours and compositions. As I worked on a few pre-compositions before deciding on the final, I realised that there was always more than one possibility to approach it, even when the elements used are kept similar throughout. This definitely helped to broaden my ideas and creativity, and it allowed me to explore on my own, both physically as well as using Photoshop. Since Photoshop was totally knew to me, it took me a while to get used to the tools.

At first, I was not very satisfied with my digital collage, but after spending more time discovering what the tools in Photoshop can do, I tried to create again another composition which I thought stood out better than the previous 3. Hence, my one takeaway from this first project is that greater results come from practicing and not being afraid to try. Some end results may not be as satisfactory, but the process of learning, discovering and exploring are what matters at the end of the day.
