REFLECTION

Experience
Throughout my whole 14 weeks of learning Typography, I have gained a lot of new knowledge and skills ranging from understanding letterforms to constructing our own type expressions, typefaces and even greeting stickers over Adobe Illustrator. Although there were countless times where I felt lost and stuck back when I was still new with the softwares, I am glad I was able to persevere and overcome them with the help of the pre-recorded lectures and tutorials online. Personally, I have never really been exposed to Typography much, so all of it felt very new to me. Before I took this module, I was quite unfamiliar with the different typefaces and did not really pay much attention to them. However, as I progressed throughout this whole semester with the different tasks, I realised that I am much more particular about type and have developed a sensitivity to it. Overall, it was a very interesting but time-consuming module as Typography requires a lot of scrutiny and careful craftings to make it perfect.

Observations
From the tasks given, I have seen how difficult it was to translate an idea we have in mind into just type itself. In task 1, we had to work on type expressions and that itself was quite difficult to manage without major illustrations to bring out a stronger impact. Not only that, in Task 3A where we had to deconstruct the letters to study their forms, it had never occured to me that some letters are not entirely symmetrical. While working on these tasks, I have learned to pay a lot more attention on type design now. It has gotten to a point where I would scrutinise on an item or a product and observe how they have crafted their type to express or market their product.

Findings
After working on all the tasks, I have found that Typography has a lot of rules and guidelines to follow. While doing Task 1 in InDesign, there were so many things that were foreign and new to me. I had to watch and replay the pre-recorded lecture about 5 to 6 times to really understand what I was doing. I also find that my learning process comes a lot from digging a trap for myself and climbing back up on my own. Many times I have accidentally made a mistake without me knowing how it happened and I have to spend time trying to fix it back. I believe that part of the reason why it was time-consuming was because I have to rely on myself to fix my own mistakes. Although it does get frustrating to a certain extent, at the end of the day, it is all part of my own learning process. Therefore, I tried to keep a positive mindset and be resilient towards the challenges faced.
