FINAL REFLECTION

1) What have I learnt in this module?

Throughout the 14 weeks of this Design Principles module, I have learned how to apply the different design principles introduced during the first 5 weeks of the semester. At first we began with watching the pre-recorded lectures and creating designs based on the principles learned as an exercise. During the feedback sessions, I was able to further understand about each principle through my artworks and how I can improve them to make it better. I believe that the flow of my learning process goes from watching the pre-recorded lectures, to doing visual research, idea and exploration and lastly getting feedback from my lecturer.

2) What did I enjoy the most?

There were many things that I enjoyed from this module, such as Project 1: Self- Portrait where we could explore our inner selves and express it in our own way through the form of art. I also had fun creating my imaginary space through Project 2: A Sense Of Place as it brought me back to my childhood days as well as the happy memories that came along with it. The exercises and projects in this module were overall very interesting and fun to work on because it stretches our ideas and creativity without any limitations to the media we choose to work with.

3) What did I not enjoy the most?

Personally, I was pretty satisfied with everything. I enjoyed the exercises and projects given and I liked doing visual research to look for inspirations that spark some new ideas within me. However, it might feel a little lonely sometimes while doing all my projects in my own comfort zone. It would have definitely been more enjoyable to create a piece of artwork together with a few other friends as we can get to know each other better and encourage peer learning during the process.

4) What have I learnt about myself through this module?

While observing my workflow throughout this module, I have learned that I progress much faster once I have organised all my sketches and idea concepts in the respective blogs. Sometimes, documenting what we have done might seem like a hassle, but it definitely helps to keep us on track so that we ourselves and other readers are able to follow through on the same train of thoughts. I have also learned there is still room for improvement regarding my software skills, as I have attempted to do digital art for most of my projects and exercises. At first, I was worried and had very little confidence in my illustration skills as I am not very familiar with digital art. However, I am glad that I had the courage to try and push myself out of my limitations and ended up learning and progressing more than I expected.

5) What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?

Throughout my learning journey, what has changed the most was probably my confidence in creating artworks that I can call my own. Many times, I found myself waver and hesitate on certain ideas because I was worried that my final outcome might not turn out looking like the idea I had in mind, or it might be too generic that a similar artwork already exists somewhere out there. However, as I got more comfortable into the weeks, I gained more confidence in executing my ideas. Instead of thinking "Is it possible to do this? What if it does not work out?", I tried to change my mindset into "How can I make this work? What is a better way to do this?".

Amongst all the things that have changed throughout these 14 weeks, what has always been kept the same was my passion to learn. I have always looked forward to feedback sessions because that was when I could learn and make improvements to my designs. Not only that, it also helped me generate new ideas whenever I was stuck. It was also a good chance for me to learn and get inspired from my peers' artworks as it was very fascinating to see that we all have different ideas and views on the same project.

6) What could be improved in this module?
Overall, it has been a wonderful and productive 14 weeks for me that I have nothing much to add. One thing that could be improved in this module would possibly be a joint assignment that I have mentioned above. I think that peer discussions can be a great way to learn and deepen our understanding on certain aspects that may sometimes be overlooked when working by ourselves. Other than that, I believe this module is a great introduction to anyone who is interested in taking design courses.
