INSTRUCTIONS
Assignment 1: Proposal
FEEDBACK
Assignment 2: Critical Review
Assignment 3: Research Design- Primary Data
Assignment 4:
FEEDBACK
Week 2:
- Understand and consider what "necessary information" includes
- Tweak and add more to specify about coffee or tea in the rationale and state my experience with those packaging designs
- Look around for tea packaging (Western, Chinese, Traditional) and compare the differences in how the minimalism concept is executed
Week 3:
- Cite a few brands and include a few images in the rationale / problem statement
- When citing more than 2 authors, use "et al."
- Combine the references together into a reference list and arrange it in alphabetical order.
- Rephrase some research questions and objectives because my reseach is not studying about whether consumers would prefer the packaging design, but more of whether consumers understand the product information being conveyed
- Remove "convey product information" in research problem since the research will be covering effectiveness in conveying product information and the aesthetic aspect of the minimalistic design
Week 4:
- Change picture source to Fig.1 and add the website link into the text
- Insert picture credits
- Tie the example back to why it is minimalist design
Week 5:
- The 5 articles for critical review can be divided into 2 parts- visual elements and perception
- Mention that the keywords are used repeatedly and consistently, so that the paper is not running off to different words
- Break off structure into 2 paragraphs so it is not too chunky
- Use research terms such as "contextuat content" to describe how the paper does not stray off to different topics
- Can subtly comment on grammatical error of the paper
- Suggest what can be improved for the reference list of the paper (e.g. research papers should be from 5 years back)
- Explain what is meant by "qualitative", how did the author conduct research for it? - Critique on the research approach (conduct a research on visual qualities? Look at existing packaging design?)
- Weakness of paper: no proper in-text citation in the paper although there is reference list
- Source of information is questionable and unreliable as it is not clear where it is applied in the paper
- Can cite other papers in the review to support my point "the importance of in-text citation in a research paper"
- Prepare 2 more critical reviews by next week
Week 6:
- Not necessary to keep repeating author's names in the same paragraph, just write "this paper"
- Use et al. if it is more than 2 authors, double check with reference list for validity of point
- State that discussion may not be robust because it is mainly from secondary source.
- Search up Vancouver citation style and provide personal view of that citation style - Explain how the research is thorough- did it follow any guidelines?
- Mention that the guidelines give strength to the conclusion because it is well structured
- Must read title of reference to decide whether the information is relevant, not just by looking at the dates.
- Write about the conclusion- is it plausible and well concluded based on observation?
Week 7:
- No need to cite research paper that is from a different subtopic.
- Can sometimes be a bit too wordy, so try to just look at the big picture.
- Change first POV to third person.
- Confirm again on the different citation styles.
Week 9:
- Add that the Cons for Visual Analysis is that it may be limited / bias
- Do have a system / flowchart on how the information will flow. How to organise and study the visuals?
- Describe what a survey is, and why is it suitable for RO2?
- Justify every question and why use social media platform
- Make age group shorter
- Justify why include gender and is it Gender / Sex?
- Have a literature as a guide to form the answers
- Start a new section in the forms to introduce minimalism
- Plan how long the survey will be open
- Make all survey questions required
- Under the title, include a brief description on the survey
Week 10:
- Recap the RO2 in the survey section
- Rephrase one of the survey questions to guide respondents to answer specifically about the design elements
- Can try to find tea enthusiasts to fill up the form
- Can start sending out the Google Forms survey already
Week 11:
- Start analysing the survey responses and include screenshots of each question
- Keep the Google Forms open and try to collect as many more responses possible - Justify some of the answers with literature
Week 12:
- Briefing on Assignment 4
Week 13:
- The font size for the title can be slightly smaller
- Can make leading smaller in the paragraphs
- Can explore with a diamond shaped video frame since overall elements have a diamond shape
- Add "For more info, please refer to my report"
- Can animate the keywords and text to appear one by one - Add a bibliography for Visual Analysis
Week 14:
- Can centralise the Age Group graph in the demographics section
- Flush left for the RO and RQs
- Can try to make the justification less wordy by breaking it into bullet points
- Good consistency in design and colour
REFLECTION
Experience
Throughout these 14 weeks, I have learned how to write a research proposal,
critical review and conduct a primary data research properly. It was quite a
new experience for me because all this while in the design course, I have never written a research paper that is so in depth. I would say that this was one of the modules that took me the longest time to complete for the assignments, because there was just a lot to write. I might also have to say that this is one of the module that I will remember for a lifetime, because I had successfully pulled an all-nighter to complete my assignment 3. While I was writing the data analysis, I only had one goal in mind which was to finish it before the deadline. I remember working on it for a full 7 hours until sunrise without losing my focus because I was so determined to get it done. Thinking back, those 7 hours really flew by so quickly. It was so peaceful and quiet, and all I could hear was the sound of me furiously typing away at my keyboard.
Observations
During the data analysis stage, I observe that a lot of the respondents gave very different responses. It was really fascinating to read the responses because it just shows how everyone have their own personal preferences and how different everyone's minds work. Although majority of the respondents are aged between 18-26, most the answers provided were also of different reasonings. Some may prefer the more minimalistic designs because they are simple, clean and aesthetic, whereas others may prefer packaging designs with visual images or the colour green because it is commonly associated with tea. Reading through all the responses have also taught me a lot, because there are so many people who are writing from different perspectives and they all have their own unique way of thinking. Overall, it was a very interesting session just to skim through all of the responses by anonymous people. Better yet, it was also fun trying to guess which of the responses came from people I know hahah!
Findings
While I was recording for my presentation, I thought that it would take me a couple of retakes and I would be good to go, but nOoOoo, definitely not. It was also my first time recording on Canva, and as much as it is convenient, it was not the most time-friendly tool to use for recording. The reason why I say that is because my videos were compressed in a way made me look really awkward and distorted. Because of that, I had to re-crop and adjust the video alignments and make sure that it is somewhat the same size and position for each slide. Not only that, after I had exported into an .mp4 video and played it back, I realised that some of my audio was cut off during the slide transitions. Due to that, I had to import my video into Adobe Premiere Pro and re-record some words so that I could insert the audio file where the words were missing. It was a really troublesome process of editing the audio to make it flow smoothly with the rest of the video. Nevertheless, I would like to look at it in a more positive way and treat it as a learning process. There is always a first for everything, so I am sure the next time I have to record a presentation on Canva again, I will know what to do.
