Exercise 5: Vector Animation
INSTRUCTIONS
For our first motion graphics practical, we were required to make a short kinetic typography for the chorus of So What by P!nk. This song is really upbeat and fun, so I was picturing the kinetic typography to be quick and energetic.
It was quite a fun practice because it was my first time working with
3D object and null object. I realised that it is a lot easier to use
null object rather than adjusting each word on its own.
2. Splitting lyrics
Final
Referring to the spreadsheet provided, I was tasked to animate the line graph. After watching the tutorial video, I proceeded to After Effects to try it out myself. It was rather easy and straightforward, but what took a lot more time was redesigning the original line graph. Nevertheless, it is a simple yet informative line graph with minimal animations to make it interesting.
After opening the file in Adobe Illustrator, I started separating the
layers to animate. At first, I was intimidated by how many layers
there were. When I imported the file to After Effects, I was very
confused because I did not rename my layers. That was when I realised
how important renaming the layers are because it will save me so much
more time.
I tried using the wiggle effect on the head according to the demonstration in class, but it seemed to move a bit too much, so I tried to adjust the numbers to see what works best. I also added a bit of a ground shaking effect so that it looks more interesting rather than just the elements moving at its position.

Week 2
Exercise 3: Kinetic Typography
- Split lyrics for text animation
- Discuss and decide the art direction (font, graphic, composition, colour, animation etc.)
1. Choosing a song
During the discussion session, all of us started throwing out song
suggestions which we think would have interesting lyrics that we
can play around with. It was difficult to choose one because most
of the songs had really great lyrics. In the end, we decided to go
with Zero by Imagine Dragons. It was a soundtrack from Wreck It
Ralph as well, so it would be easier for us to visualise the
overall style and colours we are going to use for the Kinetic
Typography.

Since there were 8 of us in the group, we have decided to split into
pairs to work on Verse 1, Chorus, Verse 2 and Bridge. For me, I worked
on the chorus with my partner and we both had a discussion on how we
would visualise the lyrics before we began working on it.
3. Moodboard and Inspiration
All of us also decided on the art direction as well as finalised a font
choice so that it is consistent throughout the video. Since this song
Zero by Imagine Dragons is also a soundtrack from the movie
Wreck-It-Ralph, we decided that it would be more in theme if we were to
use vibrant colours and pixel fonts.

4. Working on After Effects
First Draft
For our first draft, we decided to work in grayscale first so that we
can see whether or not the animation works well even without colours.
While studying my part, I felt that it was very static and not
interesting enough. When I went back to my After Effects to see how I
can fix it, I realised that I had not put motion blur and ease in for
all of my keyframes.

Second Draft
After finalising the grayscale version of my part, I then moved on to
adding colours for the background. I chose a dark purple since my
teammates have used pink and blue in their background and it would
look a lot better if we have some variety in the whole lyric
video.

After feedback session, there were some changes to be made to the
front part where the lyrics "Hello, hello" appear. In the draft, it
was too far apart and it should be made closer to each other. After
making that change to my part, I was still not very satisfied with my
work. Hence, I kept studying my teammates' parts to grasp the overall
kinetic movement and tried to apply it into mine as well so that it
does not look too anti-climatic.

Exercise 5: Vector Animation
For this week, we practised how to do bounce effects, wiggle and
puppet position pin tool. As a practise, we learned how to do the
bounce effect in class and we could see the difference between no
bounce effect and with bounce effect. It definitely looks more
energetic with the effect even though it is just a very minimal
movement.

FEEDBACKS
Week 3
- The grayscale looks good as well, maybe can add some colours
onto the keywords to give emphasis
Week 4
- The lyrics "Hello, hello" in the chorus part has to be closer
together
REFLECTION
I have always been quite fascinated with watching kinetic typography lyric videos online and I never thought I would have the chance to learn and do the animation myself. It was a really enjoyable process, although I was very close to getting sick of the song that kept replaying non-stop while I was editing my part. The line chart animation was also very new to me and it was much simpler than I thought it would be. I also find that the vector animation practise was very helpful because I was able to get used to some of the basic animations before working on our final project. Although it was a little time consuming, I have learned that it is important to properly plan out which layers to separate and also remember to rename them so that it would make life easier for me.
