TASKS

This individual project is a continuation from our Project 2, where we have created a brand and the product packaging for a Banana Blossom Spring Roll Skin food product.

For this task, we are required to create 5 merchandise items, including a POP display based on project 2. We have to research and analyse the brand packaging design, and then develop 5 merchandise concepts that reflects the brand's message and target audience.

1) References

Fig. 1.1 Pinterest Board

Before I started listing down what merchandise I could make, I went onto Pinterest to look for some inspirations and references in the merchandise. As I was scrolling, I found items like apron, caps and notebook, but I thought that would be too common to design.

Hence, I looked for more inspirations online and found a few interesting items that caters to students or teenagers. From there, I was thinking of things that students might bring to school and listed down a bunch of items I could brand such as:
  1. Lunchbox
  2. Cutlery Set
  3. Napkin
  4. Bag Tag
  5. Totebag
  6. Memopad
  7. Pencil Case
  8. Bottle Flask
With this list, I consulted with my lecturer and we decided to proceed with cutlery set, bag tag, totebag, bottle flask and POP display. I then started to look for mockups on Unblast, Freepick and Mockups-design.com.

2) Designing Process

i) Bottle Flask

For my first merchandise, I found a nice metal bottle flask mockup, which reminded me of the ones that I have seen my friends bring to school very often. The shiny surface of the metal would look great for the design and so I proceeded with this.

I made a very simple but unique and recognisable design for the bottle. Using the colour palettes that we had finalised in Project 2, and also the background patterns that we have used in our packaging, I added our brand logo on top of it. To give a bit of visual weight to the base, I also added a darker green rectangle at the bottom.

ii) Bag Tag

Moving on to the bag tag, I was thinking of leaving a space to write down details. Since these merchandise are suited for kids to use, most of the time, parents would write down their contact info or the child's name on the tag so that if it goes missing, they can be contacted. Hence, I left a rectangular box with lines in the front so that it can is clearly visible. Other than that, I kept the design consistent with what I have made for the bottle flask as well.

I also added the tagline of the brand behind the tag, which gives a bit more information on what Wrap & Roll is; a convenient popiah skin food product that makes preparing food quick and easy.

iii) Totebag

In my first attempt in designing a bag, I wanted to find an eco-friendly market bag to design. As I looked for mockups, I came across this one which had 2 bags side by side. My initial idea was to design only the front, and keep the background simple. But, after looking at my other merchandise, I notice that this one was not consistent with the rest. Hence, I decided to change to another bag mockup.

To keep my design consistent with the rest, I added the patterns that I have used in the background and also kept the same shade of green. For simpler bag design, I made my logo small and placed it in the bottom corner so that it is not too outstanding, but is still noticeable due to its contrast with the background.

As for the back of the packaging, I placed the brand tagline in a larger size so that there is a clear difference between the 2 sides of the bag.

iv) Cutlery Set

Moving on to the cutlery set, for this as well I was thinking of keeping it simple like the bottle flask. Since the cutlery box is quite long in length, I had a bit of dilemma on where to put the logo, and in what orientation.

In the end, I still preferred keeping the logo at the centre as it has been for all the other merchandise designs.

v) POP Display

For the POP Display, I went for a fridge mockup because our food product is a frozen food. I kept the side of the fridge simple with just the patterns and the logo.

As for the front of the packaging, I included the taglines, and also the most important information which is what the Spring Roll Skin is made from. I also included the picture of our real product packaging and also an image of the banana blossom for reference.

Other than the fridge mockup for the POP display, I also made two standing banners that can be placed beside the fridge to promote the launch of the product. For the banners as well, I included images of the product packaging, banana blossom and also a plate of popiah using the Banana Blossom Skin. Overall, I kept the designs consistent, using the same typefaces, colours and also the patterns in the background.

FEEDBACK

Week 12
- Designs look very consistent
- Bag design can be improved, logo can be smaller
- POP Display background colour clashes with the product image, may need better contrast

REFLECTION

Experience
As this project is a continuation from Project 2, it was a lot easier to design the merchandise as we had already finalised the typefaces, logo, colour palettes in Project 2. It's just a matter of laying it out and presenting the information and visuals in a pleasing way. Overall, this final project was quite enjoyable and fun as we could work on items of our choice.

Observation
While working on this project, I realised how the designs for each merchandise does not have to be as complex as I thought. It could just be a simple design using the patterns and logos, and it will still turn out nice. I think one of the reasons for that is because we had established a pretty solid branding for the product in Project 2, hence we didn't really face much difficulties while doing this project.

Findings
As I was thinking about my merchandise items, I had a lot of things that I wanted to brand and it became difficult for me to decide what to choose. After our lecturer told us that it would be best to follow a certain concept, I thought about my food product and target audience again. Since it is a convenient and easy to make food, I was reminded of school lunch for children. So, I decided that my concept would be "Back to School" and it became a lot easier for me to choose what items to brand.
