REFLECTION

Experience
It has been a very fruitful and memorable 13 weeks of thisPublishing Design module. Before I took this module, I heard from my friends that it is very challenging and the task given can be quite heavy. However, after going though this module myself, I don't think it was as bad as I thought. In fact, it might be one of my favourite modules for this semester. I have always been curious and interested about book designing and publishing process, so doing all of the exercises in class were fun and it reminded me of my high school art class. I think one of the main reasons why I really enjoyed this module is because we get to do some hands on work besides just working from our laptop all the time. I also got to experience using the school printer and spending my money away printing out thumbnails for every task.

Observation
In this module, I believe the most challenging part is doing our layouts for our book. At first, I thought completing 16 visuals would be the difficult part, but when we started working on layout, I realised that no matter how good the visual looks, a bad layout will still make the book design look terrible. I guess it takes a lot of visual referencing, exploring, trial and errors on layouts until we like what we make. Sometimes, we need more than a pair of eyes to see our work to know if it is working or not. Thankfully, I have many pairs of eyes to help and give me advise on how to improve my work.

Findings
While working on the content for this book, I found it really therapeutic for me. I have always wanted to write my own book and draw out things that cannot be put into words, but can be felt instead. When I first started doing my visuals, I doubted myself at first because it didn't seem like it was going well. I made a few sketches and draw out what each emotion felt like to me, but it was not that successful in the first few tries. As I keep trying, I realise that I am no longer following a system that I set for myself in the beginning, and I was able to let myself flow with my drawings. I guess that really helped me to clear my mind and draw what I was feeling for each emotion. At the end of the day, I think what makes me attached to my book is the fact that I was able to generate my own original content and visuals that I have been wanting to produce for a long time.
